Newsletter 2022 Term 2 Week 7
From the Principal's Desk
I would like to start this week's Newsletter by highlighting the outstanding commitment to our school by our P&C. The ongoing support provided by this group of dedicated parents and citizens to our students is amazing, and on behalf of the school, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation for all that you do. Recently, the P&C have paid for the entire cost of transport for the Year 5/6 camp to North Keppel Island ($3500), Mary Valley Athletics transport ($400), as well as sponsoring RawArt ($500) and potentially our instrumental music programme. This ongoing support to our school helps keeps costs for parents down to an absolute minimum, so if you can assist our P&C with any fundraising activities, please don't hesitate to contact them.
Our Mini Sports Carnival was held last Thursday at Amamoor, with both Kandanga and Dagun State Schools in attendance. With the weather finally being kind and the oval dried out, students were able to participate in a range of athletics events. While Dagun SS won the aggregate trophy (based on student numbers), Amamoor students again did us proud, placing first in the distance events, Sprints, Relays and Ball Games! A special thank you must be extended to Dave Hall, our groundsman, and to Mrs Alford, for again organising and setting up on the day.
Following on from this carnival, Amamoor SS will also be participating in the Mary Valley Athletics Gala Day on June 17, at Imbil. Notes were sent home with students yesterday, along with Tuck Shop order forms, so please make sure you check your child's bag if you did not receive the note! There is no cost for this day and parents are most welcome to attend. Please ensure your child is in full school uniform (including hat), and brings a water bottle (and lunch if not using the Tuckshop).
Teachers and students have now commenced the end of semester assessment and reporting period. This is a critical time of the semester, so please ensure your child arrives at school on time and ready to learn. Try not to plan holidays during this time and keep your child away from school, as this has quite an impact on assessment and learning. As parent/teacher interviews were unable to be held during Term 1, we will attempt to schedule these in later in Term 2, prior to report cards being sent home.
Thank you to all of the parents who continue to assist us in promoting healthy lunches at school. In our ongoing efforts to minimise rubbish, we would also like to ask that you consider reducing the amount of soft plastics that are sent to school in lunchboxes. Reusable containers are most preferred. Thank you again for helping us educate students about the importance of environmental awareness and healthy choices.
Our Positive Behaviour for Learning 'bucket' is now nearly full, which means that students will be able to celebrate their excellent behaviour with a reward day. Students are now invited to submit their ideas to their classroom teachers, with one being 'pulled out of the hat' in the next week!
I look forward to seeing you around the school.
Kind regards,
Tony Benzie

Instrumental Music
This week, Mr Coonan visited the school to work with the students and help fine tune some techniques! He also welcomed two extra students into the programme, taking the total number of students from Amamoor participating to 14 (or 22% of enrolments), which is a fantastic result in our first year!
Recycling Incursion
Today, Miss Chloe Zatta from Cleanaway's Waste Education programme visited our school. The focus was on how to correctly use both the recycling bin and the general waste bin. Students learnt what items can go into the bins and where the bins end up after collection.
Recycling bins accept hard plastic containers and bottles, paper, cardboard, steel and aluminium cans and also glass bottles and jars. Students discovered that lids are removed before placing items in the recycling bin, they also learnt that we can't recycle anything that's smaller than the palm of our hand. When it comes to recycling, keep it simple, keep it clean and size is important.
Students got to see where our recycling bin goes after it is collected by one of Cleanaway's trucks. For Gympie residents, our recycling bins are taken to the Material Recover Facility (MRF) in Hervey Bay, where all the materials are sorted and separated. Recycling provides us with the opportunity for resource recovery. When we recycle 1x aluminium can, we can save enough energy to power a tv for 3 hours!
Hopefully, Miss Chloe will return to Amamoor to help us further improve our recycling efforts!
Kitchen / Garden Programme
Our Kitchen/Garden programme is now underway with George working hard to provide the younger students with authentic 'hands on' experiences. Students have been weeding our garden beds, planting seedlings and harvesting. They have also been learning about hygiene when cooking, how to prepare different types of food, and best of all, eating their hard work!
Chappy's News...
Hi everybody,
What an interesting couple of weeks we’ve had. We had a wonderful night last Saturday with our Trivia Night. All funds raised from that night went towards supporting Chaplaincy here at Amamoor, and it was well attended by many community members which was so great to see.
It was also good to see so many of our school community turn up yesterday for mini sports and wonderful to see the way that our students encouraged not only each other, but their sportsmanship towards the other schools.
I am so proud of the way our students represent our school and it is days like this that make me excited and proud to be the Chaplain here at Amamoor.
See you around school,
Chappy Caitlin
Student Council
As it’s getting cold please remember student jumpers. School jumpers must be navy blue and have student names inside. Student leaders will be checking for names on jumpers and that students are wearing correct school uniform.
Most weeks the student council will be selling ice blocks for $1 on Tuesdays and Thursdays out the front of the school at 3pm. The money raised will be going towards the Year 6 end of year excursion. We are also going to be having a Free Dress Day for the State of Origin on the 8th of June. The last free dress day we ran raised $129.50 for flood victims and that money was given to the Salvation Army for them to hand out.
This term Ella and Savanah will be hosting a structured game for students at second break on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All students are welcome to participate in age appropriate games.
Please remember to pack something healthy in children’s lunchboxes for both snacks and lunch as the Student Council encourages all students to eat healthy foods first.
P&C News
This term is certainly flying by with only a few weeks until its school holidays again.
We’ve had the election bake sale and I would like to thank Mary, Claire and Teshian for volunteering their time to help as well as our home bakers Miyuki, Brydie, Kathy, Anna and Teshian.
Today was Mini Sports and what a fantastic day it turned out to be. Thankyou to our baker of goodies as there were many delicious treats to eat. Thanks to our helpers who cooked, served, and packed orders. A big thank you has to go to our fantastic teachers and teacher aides for organizing and running the day.
Our order of yummy Panini pies are arriving Wednesday afternoon. These past couple of days have been a touch chilly and just the right weather for some easy pie dinners.
Next term we have a couple of fundraisers. The first being a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on Saturday 16th July, first weekend back next term. Notes will be going home soon for volunteers. We require around 10 people to do a 3 hour shift of either 7-10am, 10am-1pm or 1-4pm. A few hours of your time can make a big impact on activities for your kids.
The second fundraiser is Gympie Music Muster. This year we are looking after the signage around the Muster area. We start at the beginning of August and have to have them up by the 13th August and then take down by the 5th September. If anyone would be interested in helping has the option of a ticket for every 8 hours volunteered. We are looking for someone to co-ordinate this activity so if you would like to go to the Muster without the cost please get in touch.
If you feel like or know of someone who would like to volunteer some time to give our gardens a bit of TLC we have a list of areas on the tuckshop blackboard. If you would like to do some work during school hours please sign in at the office and if out of school hours suit you better please let either Tony or Rachael know.
You can keep up with what’s happening with the P&C by becoming a member and get the agenda and minutes sent to you or by joining the P&C Facebook page Amamoor State School P&C Association | Facebook . If you would like to put an item forward or have an item discussed at a meeting you can either catch one of our committee members in person or by phone, send us a text or email or write in the P&C book up in the office.
The next P&C meeting will be held on Wednesday 13 July, at 3:30pm.
