Newsletter 2022 Term 2 Week 9
From the Principal's Desk
Welcome to the last newsletter of Semester 1! These last two weeks, together with next week, typify what a busy time it has been at Amamoor. You will find that we have tried to put as much as possible into this edition, without overwhelming readers with too much information.
Thank you to everyone who has helped at Amamoor during this semester. To the staff, the parents, the P&C and all the other contributors to our school...thank you again for your ongoing support. Your commitment continues to help our efforts to make Amamoor SS a centre of excellence in the valley, while retaining a strong focus on family and community.
Inside this edition you will find reports on the Year 5 excursion to the USC Gympie campus, Under 8s Day, Student Council, Playgroup, Mary Valley Athletics Carnival, Homework Centre, Kitchen/Garden programme, Instrumental Music and our Positive Behaviour for Learning celebrations, to name a few!
With a high expectation at Amamoor SS around uniforms, behaviour, pride in school and respect, it was lovely to receive very positive messages from other schools in the valley about Amamoor's participation at the Mary Valley State College Athletics Carnival. To quote one staff member...'I thought the Amamoor kids were absolute standouts, both on and off the field, especially the way they behaved and conducted themselves!' It is always reassuring to receive such positive remarks and our students should be very proud.
Most testing has now been completed for the semester, with teachers busily compiling mid-year report cards, as well as conducting parent/teacher interviews. It is an extremely busy time of the year for teachers and I thank all of those parents who have made an effort to meet with teachers to discuss their child/children's progress. I cannot encourage parents enough to be actively engaged with their child's educational journey. If you have not yet been able to organise a meeting, please make contact with your child's teacher.
To celebrate our school's entry into instrumental music this year, we have organised for the Sunshine Beach State High School's (SBSHS) Stage Band to perform at our school on Friday the 24th of June. Commencing at 10am, SBSHS will play a variety of numbers for our students, and demonstrate a wide range of instruments. The performance will be held in the Undercover Area, with parents most welcome to attend.
Our Positive Behaviour for Learning programme is designed to reward all students in our school who exhibit excellent behaviour. This Friday afternoon, 24 June, has been set aside for this celebration. Student suggestions are due Monday, with the announcement on Tuesday. A note will be sent home to parents to advise. There is no cost for this activity.
A reminder to parents that Term 3 will begin on Monday, 11 July.
I wish you all a safe and happy holiday period and look forward to seeing you next term. Please remember to keep an eye out over the school during this time, and if you see anything suspicious, please call School Watch on 131788.
Kind regards,
Tony Benzie

Last week we had a visit from Christian and Elaine from Bunnings Gympie. As the Lifestyle Co-ordinator and Activities Organiser, Christian and Elaine were happy to visit and support us with the planning of our Yarning Circle. We received a $100 voucher as well as a variety of plants for our garden. Bunnings has been going out to many communities located around Gympie, including Rainbow Beach and Jones Hill State Schools. Bunnings has a priority of helping their locals and local communities and we appreciate their help at our school.
We continue to remind students at Amamoor SS to have their healthy food first and to put compost scraps in the small compost bin in our under cover eating area which will then be fed to our worm farm.
As always, we would like all students riding bikes/scoters to always wear a helmet and not ride around in the car parks.
Last week we held a State of Origin fundraiser for the Year 6 end-of-year excursion. On this day we raised over $100!!! We would like to say thank you to all the parents and students that participated and supported us.

Chappy's Corner
Hi everybody,
Wow, we are almost at the end of the term. I hope that everyone has had a fantastic term, and that you all have a relaxing and well-deserved break. Last week, the Year 6 Student Council held a fundraiser for the State of Origin raising money for their End of Year excursion. We raised $106.05 for that, and we are so grateful to everyone who turned out in their red and blue to support the student leaders. I have also enjoyed just spending time with our students and seeing how well they are progressing with their schoolwork and their friendships in the playground. I am so proud to be the chaplain here because our students look out for each other and are so caring towards not only each other but also the staff here at school.
I can’t wait to see you all next term, and to hear about everyone’s holidays.
See you around school,
Chappy Caitlin

P&C Update
As the end of the term is nearly upon us, we are heading into a period of rest, relaxation and recovery from the crazy term that Term 2 was with the multiple public holidays and flooding.
Hopefully, everyone who ordered their Panini’s Pies have been enjoying their goodies. Don’t forget we have another Pie Drive in Term 4, so if you missed out or are running low, you will still get another chance to enjoy these delicious treats this year.
I would like to thank those of you who have contacted me and come up to the school over the weekends to help give the gardens a bit of TLC. On the tuck shop blackboard there is a list of areas requiring some love so if you would like volunteer a bit of time to help our gardens out, weekdays, weekends or even over the holidays, it would be very much appreciated. You can let us know if you are planning to come up at the office during school hours or let Tony or Rachael know.
At the beginning of next term, we have a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on the 16th of July, first Saturday back. Notes to help volunteer your time, a 3-hour slot, have been sent home, if you missed out, please contact the office or Rachael. Events like this allow parents to offer a brief period of time but gives the kids a big helping hand at being able to go on excursions or camp.
We also have Muster happening in August. We have been given the option of looking after the signage around the Muster. If you are interested in being a coordinator, just organizing people to help, for this event please get in touch.
You can keep up with what’s happening in the P&C by becoming a member and receiving a copy of the minutes from the meetings (Membership forms are available in the office). Another option is to join our Facebook page. If you have a great idea or an item that you would like us to discuss at a meeting, you can either catch one of our friendly committee members in person, by phone, send us a text or email, or even write in our P&C book which lives up in the office.
If I don’t see you before, have a safe and happy holiday and I look forward to seeing you next term.
The next P&C meeting will be held on Wednesday 13 July, at 3:30pm.

Playgroup activities
We have been exploring new textures over the last couple of weeks and getting a little bit messy. First was Slime and Moon Sand but the crowd favourite is bird seed! We have been practising tipping it into bottles and making shakers.
Our friends have also been making some beautiful art work; using their fingers to paint and squeezing paint filled sponges to create different shapes.
We have welcomed two new friends who have had so much fun with us all.
I thank you all so much for making everyone always feel so welcome.
See you all next week for our last playgroup for the term.
Premier's Reading Challenge
I am delighted to invite all Amamoor State School students to join in the 2022 Queensland Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC).
The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, between now and 26 August. Enclosed is a reader record form.
To complete the challenge:
- Prep to Year 2 must read or experience at least 20 books
- Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books
- Years 5 to 9 must read at least 15 books.
Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2022 challenge is to engage more students to read than ever before! Last year saw more than 168,000 children from around the state participate.
Key dates | Activity |
Now – 26 August | Reading period for Prep to Year 9 students |
29 August | Student reader record forms submitted to teacher |
31 October to 11 November | Premier's Reading Challenge celebration weeks |
For suggested books or for more information about the PRC, please visit: readingchallenge.education.qld.gov.au or contact Amamoor State School.
Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier. I look forward to seeing as many of our students as possible take part in the 2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Kitchen Garden Programme
This week, the Prep / One class has been working with George in the garden picking lettuces, tomatoes and strawberries. Then the students helped to make yummy sandwiches!
