Newsletter 2022 Term 3 Week 5
From the Principal's Desk
It is with much disappointment that I start this edition of our school's newsletter. On the night of Monday, 1 August, our school groundsman's shed was set alight, with all contents inside completely destroyed, and the shed requiring complete demolition. Many thousands of dollars of equipment, including our ride-on mower will now need replacing...unfortunately, this could take quite some time.
At Amamoor State School we take pride in the upkeep and presentation of our school and this wanton act will certainly impact our efforts in this area. I must publicly thank Mr Lucht, Principal of Kandanga State School, for providing the use of his school's ride on mower one day per week until we can finalise a replacement.
Each night, our school doors, windows and gates are locked and checked, with personnel on-site quite early each morning. If you should see anyone on school grounds outside of school hours, please do not hesitate to call School Watch on 131 788 or crimestoppers on 1800 333 000. Thank you.
Each term, students and staff at Amamoor practise emergency drills to ensure the safety of everyone at all times. This term, we have already practised both Lock Down and Fire Evacuation Drills, with students responding quickly and sensibly following our set proceedures.
While the identity of the person/persons responsible for the arson attack remains unknown at this stage, if you should have any information that could assist in this investigation, please contact Seargent Bill Greer at Imbil police on 5480 1717. Thank you.
On a more positive note, the school has joined with the P&C to finally purchase football (soccer) goals for the school oval. Hopefully, these goals will be installed on the oval this week, providing an important play option for our students. Thank you to all involved.
Amamoor State School continues to be very busy with the Gympie Primary Teams Challenge and RawArt happening last week, while this week we have a Japanese Drumming Incursion for all students, as well as our 4/5/6 students participating in the Mary Valley State College Science Fair. Planning is now underway for our Year 4 camp, while time is rapidly counting down for our Year 5/6 camp to North Keppel Island. If you have not yet already, please ensure that all forms are returned to the school office asap and any outstanding monies are paid. If you are having any difficulties, please contact the school office to discuss.
Congratulations to all of our students who represented our school at the recent District Athletics competition at Gympie. Each of our students placed well, with Leila Gurnett also being selected to compete in the Regional Athletics competition later in the month.
Our instrumental music curriculum continues to do well, with Mr Luke Coonan visiting the school this coming Friday to provide a whole day, one-on-one opportunity for our students to fine tune their developing musical skills. Meanwhile, Miss Rose, our Music teacher has recommenced our drumming group, with over 19 students participating every week.
I wish you a happy week and leave you with a couple of pictures below of the unecessary destruction recently experienced by our lovely school.

Gympie Primary Teams Challenge 2022
On Tuesday 9 August, ten of Amamoor’s finest mathematical minds attended the annual Gympie Maths Team Challenge hosted by One Mile State School. This is one of the only opportunities for students in the Gympie region to compete against other primary schools academically. The event was well attended with over twenty teams competing. The calibre of questioning was very high, with some of the questions posed stumping even the adults in attendance. Some examples have been included below, so you can test your mathematical prowess. Our teams worked well together, with our A team coming 2nd in the Small School Category. We look forward to consolidating and building on this success in 2023.
Q1. The operation a*b means add the sum of a and b to the product of a and b. What does 25*35 equal?
Q2. How fast is a river flowing if a person can row downstream at 18 kilometres per hour and upstream at 6 kilometres per hour?
Q3. The year 2022 is not divisible by 11. What is the next year divisible by 11?
Q4. A nude number is a natural number whose digits are divisors of the number. For example, 36 is nude, since 3 and 6 are divisors of 36. A number is called cute if it has exactly 4 positive divisors including the number itself. For example, 10 is cute since it has 4 divisors, 1, 2, 5 and 10. What is the smallest 2-digit which is both cute and nude?
Q5. Find two numbers a and b, such that the sum, product and quotient of the two numbers are all equal.
The following day, our students also attended One Mile State School again to compete in the English Challenge. Amamoor performed strongly again and placed just outside the top three.
Congratulations to all participants: Calypso Jones, Savanah Cottom, Ella McKelvie, Maddisen Bailey, Brock Watterson, Jake Blunsum, Amelia Fewtrell, Bella Leucht, Declan Thompson, Dextur Hohn, Sophia Walters, Xanthe KIng, Gracie Weston
Mary Valley Show Craftwork
The annual Mary Valley Show is being held this Sunday, 14 August. Primary school students from across the region are invited to submit arts, crafts and cooking entries into the Show's schools category. Students have been busy learning the skills of finger knitting, making god's eyes and creating metal work sculptures. If you are visiting the show this weekend, be sure to take the time to view their work in the pavilion! Thank you to Miss Broome for organising the display of our students' work.
Run Club
Run Club is held every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 8:00am to 8:30am for students in Years 1 -6. As the oval and the cross country track have a fair bit of dirt, mud and damp-dew grass in the early mornings, it is strongly recommended that students bring a second pair of shoes and socks to change into afterwards!
P&C News
Thank you to all of the parents and staff who have volunteered at the Muster site and helping to put up signage. Once the signage from last Muster was sorted (and cleaned), we began the monumental task of sorting and arranging placements. With much left to do, it would be most appreciated if you could help out, if only for a couple of hours. Our next working bee is next Monday, with another the following Sunday. Please phone Rachael if you would be able to help out on 0409 833 500.
Remember, if you volunteer over six hours, you will receive a free day ticket for the Muster. This is an amazing fundraising opportunity for us and will help offset costs for parents with excursions and camps.
Unfortunately, our last meeting had to be rescheduled due to various conflicting times. As a result, we will be bringing forward the September meeting and attempt to hold it in late August. The date will be promulgated shortly.
Rachael.
Little Kids Day Out!
This annual free event is coming up shortly at the Gympie Show Pavilion and grounds. Amamoor State School was asked at short notice to contribute something for the school's division, and of course, our wonderful Mrs Alford was all to happy to lend a hand and organise students to create an artistic piece! Thank you Mrs Alford.
Homework Centre
Our Homework Centre continues to provide free after-school care for students to access every day from 3:00 - 4:30pm. Students are fully supervised during this time, with a free snack also provided for every student. If you would like to access this service, please contact the school office.
