2023 Term 2 Week 4
Principal's Report
Our term continues to be busy, with much currently happening at Amamoor State School. Today we celebrated the end of our Book Week by holding a 'Pirate Day.' It was wonderful to see so many students taking the time and effort to create some fantastic pirate outfits. Thank you to all of the parents out there who helped to make this happen! Each class came up on Parade today to display their costumes, after which, there was a 'treasure hunt!' Much excitement ensued with plenty of 'gold' coins discovered around the school. I do believe that these were later traded for a tastier treat when back in class! Congratulations to all staff involved for your efforts.
Still on the topic of Book Week, our Library was again a sight to see, with an enormous array of items up for sale. Mrs Alford was again at the top of her game, creating an inspiring Book Fair setting for our students. This year we sold over $1000 worth of books and stationery, meaning that the school will receive over $350 worth of books! Thank you everyone for your ongoing support.
The 2032 Premier's Reading Challenge has now opened, with Amamoor State School registered to participate. This annual state-wide initiative, for state and non-state schools, has been running since 2006, with more than 20 million books read by over 160,000 students! The Challenge is not a competition, however, it does aim to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learning. Forms and parent notes will be ready next week for students to bring home and I encourage all of our students to participate.
Telecommunications work will commence at our school next Monday, with the first stage of our bandwidth upgrade. While we may experience some minor outages on the day, this upgrade will see our school's bandwidth increased from the current 4 Mbps to over 40 Mbps. This first step will provide a massive increase with our internet speeds, with the second stage, later in the year, forecast to increase our bandwidth up to 200 Mbps!
Please remember that the school will be closed this Friday for the Gympie Show Holiday, reopening on Monday, 22 May. Our Life Education visit will be on 24 and 25 May, with school photos on Tuesday, 6 June. Planning is nearly complete for our annual Mini Sports Athletics Carnival, scheduled for Wednesday, 7 June. This year the carnival will have the format changed to also include field events (shot put, high jump, long jump and discus), as well as the traditional track events and our own Mary Valley Ball Games. The P&C will be running a canteen on the day, with full information being sent out to parents in the next two weeks.
A huge thank you to Neil Gurnett, the P&C committee and all the wonderful volunteers who turned up to support the recent fundraising event at Bunnings Gympie. This recent sausage sizzle raised over $1000, which will be used to support your children at Amamoor State School. If you can spare an hour or two at a fundraising event, the P&C would love to hear from you. Please see Neil's information piece later in the Newsletter.
On a final note, the upgrade of our tennis court surface is due to commence on the 2nd of June. This work will entail the entire court area fenced off to students, with heavy machinery accessing the site via Cleary's Lane. The court surface will be 'peeled back' with any intrusive root systems removed, prior to being resealed. The surrounding embankments will also be reshaped to allow for improved water run-off. It is estimated that the work will take about two weeks to complete. During this period, the school will operate as normal, with alternative play areas for students.
Have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you around the school!

Library Readings...
Kitchen/Garden Programme
This fortnight, in kitchen/garden, students made pasta with a tomato sauce with some fresh herbs (parsley, oregano, rosemary and basil) made from the garden. The Year 4 boys also decided to add some chilli to their pasta! While it was still tasty, it proved to be a little too hot for our brave young lads. They also tried some other ingredients and added these to the pasta... these included capers, anchovies and olives. There were mixed reactions from the students to these, but most tried and added some to their dish. Students also tried the capers straight out of the jar, as well as some which were deep fried. The deep-fried capers proved to be a hit and were all quickly eaten!
Meanwhile, in the garden, students have been doing maintenance and weeding as well as planting out radish and carrot seedlings that were sown last fortnight.
Students of the Week
Congratulations to this week's winners...
Elizabeth, Ronan, Ari, Leila, Ava and our Preppie Pirate!
Instrumental Music
Miss Emma from the Instumental Music programme came for a visit on Monday to spend some quality time with the students and do some important practice!

Our student leaders introduced our upcoming PBL focus on Parade today. Attached below is what our school will be focusing our behaviour on for the next fortnight...

P&C News
Well It’s the middle of Term 2 and our fundraising activities have begun. Our Bunnings sausage sizzle on Sunday 7 May was a great success raising over $1000 in profit for our school. This money is allocated to the student’s end of year books that they receive during our annual Christmas party. It’s a great tradition that we are pleased to be able to continue. A big thank you to all those involved in the volunteering effort – Kate (Vice-President), Anika (Treasurer), Brydie, Morgan, David and Mary.
We now have a Treasurer! Thanks Anika for taking on this role. Your enthusiasm and commitment to the P&C is already making a difference.
Next up is Mini Sports on Wednesday 7 June. P&C will be providing the canteen/lunch service for the day. Money raised from this event will go towards supporting our awesome swimming and surf safety programs. As this is an all school initiative, all parents and friends are encouraged to volunteer to make this fundraising activity a success. Keep an eye out for the event posters around the school and in the students’ homework folders.
On the topic of fundraising, from next week you will be able to see posters for each of the fundraising activities being undertaken this year on the P&C noticeboard out the front of the school. We will also be posting these to the Amamoor SS P&C Facebook page. Please take the opportunity to look over the posters and see which activities you can help out with. Express your interest using the QR codes on the posters or by emailing to: amamoorsspandc@outlook.com.
Next meeting is on Wednesday 22nd June at 3:45 at the school. Come along and have a chat.
Cheers,
Neil
Waste Management Visit
We would like to give a big Thank You to Chloe for coming to Amamoor State School once again to talk about waste management. The students all had so much fun learning about the interesting things that happen to waste. We played the soring game that Chloe bought in. We were really excited to learn about worms and what they can eat and what they can't, also the incredible facts about them. We would also like to thank Chloe for bringing her amazing worm farm all the way to Amamoor State School to show the students. Everyone loved it. Holding the worms, learning about waste and most of all, for Chloe for coming and doing it all. So, once again the whole of Amamoor State Shool would love to give Chloe a very big thank you and we look forward to seeing you next time. Gracie.
