From the Principal's Desk
As you will see when reading this week's newsletter, there has certainly been a lot on at Amamoor State School recently, with just as much around the corner!
National Science Week saw us participate in the Bricks4Kidz incursion, with Gavin presenting some wonderful activities, as well as the senior students travelling to Mary Valley State College for a whole day of fabulous science experiments. From all accounts, both experiences were thoroughly enjoyed and it was wonderful to hear such positive comments from other schools about the behaviour of our students.
This week sees Book Fair kick off in the school library, with lots of fantastic things to see for the students. Thank you to Mrs Alford for setting this up, as well as Mrs Story and Mrs Howard. A dress parade will be held on Friday morning, with winners judged from each class for best costume!
Later in this edition, you will find an information flyer for the Mary Valley State College Year 6 - 7 transition afternoon. This session will be held for both students and parents at Imbil, on Thursday, 26 August, starting from 3:30pm.
The P&C Association is planning to hold a Father's Day stall on Wednesday, 1 September in the afternoon. This event had to be brought forward this year due to other events occuring on the following two days.
Students in Years Prep - 2 are getting very excited as they count down the days until they head off on their excursion to Australia Zoo! This full-day excursion is scheduled for Thursday, 2 September, with students departing Amamoor State School nice and early (don't be late!). Please note that the bus is due to return to Amamoor just after 3pm.
Friday, 3 September is a STUDENT FREE DAY. This day is set aside for staff to conduct important professional development obligations and as such, will not be able to provide any supervision for children. Please ensure you mark this day in your calendar.
The Year 4/5/6 class is also preparing for their rescheduled camp to Noosa North Shore in Week 9. They will depart Amamoor on Monday 6 September and return on Wednesday 8 September. Miss Broome, Mrs Story and Mr Benzie will be accompanying students on this camp.
Our school 'Fun Run' is also fast approaching. This fundraising event is designed to support our Chaplain here at Amamoor to ensure that all the great work she does can continue into next year. Please get behind this and support our kids!
Thank you to everyone for supporting our new Homework Centre. Open every day, from 3 - 4:30pm, we are operating at near capacity each day. Welcome to Miss Hannah and Mrs Tombs in your role as Teacher Aides at the centre and again, thank you to Mrs Story and Mrs Alford for your hard work. The centre has also been provided with extra fruit supplies generously donated by the Anthem Church in Maroochydore.
As of this Wednesday, the mobile dental van will be located at Amamoor State School. The Sunshine Coast Oral Health provides this convenient and free dental service care for your child/children within the school environment. Forms will be sent home this week detailing access.
Finally, our centenary celebrations continue to gather pace, with much organising to do. Later in this edition you will find a sponsor form for the centenary book currently being compiled by Mrs Diane Cleary. If you would like a page in the book, please fill in the form and email to Diane quickly, as the book will commence being prepared for publication soon.
Have a wonderful week.
Regards,
Tony Benzie

On Wednesday, Gavin came to our school to teach us about Lego, block coding and robotics. The class was split up into 5 groups of 3 and each group made their own colour censored robot, meaning different colours placed on the censors will make the robot do different things. The Year five and six class had a blast making and playing with the robots!
Student Council
Last week, our school council started. Chappy and the Year 6’s will be planning to hold some fundraisers and organising activities like the oval games and buddy reading. We look forward to keeping you updated on all our upcoming events/fundraisers.

Book Week is here!
P&C News
We’re into the home straight and about to slide into the September school holidays. There’s still 4 more weeks of jam-packed fun around the school with book fair, camp, Australia Zoo excursion and Chappy’s colour run.
On Wednesday afternoon Elaine from Bunnings came out and supplied us with a worm farm and a few other garden extras. With the help of the Year 6 students, they set up the worm farm that will help with the compost and veggie patches.
Bunnings have offered us a sausage sizzle spot on Sunday 10th October. Notes will come out shortly for people to offer 3 hours of their time to either cook or serve some snags.
Wednesday 1st September, we have a Make and Take Father’s Day surprise in the afternoon, so if there’s any Mums out there that would like to come along and help you are more than welcome to join.
With Centenary fast approaching we will be having a working bee on Tuesday 21st September. Wait, what, a Tuesday! It’s the first week of school holidays and the groundsmen will be available to help. There are plenty of jobs both big and small to be done.
“AMAMOOR STATE SCHOOL IS TURNING 100!”
On Saturday, 16th October 2021, everyone is invited to a celebration and reunion being held at Amamoor State School from 9:00am to 3:00pm. A relaxed community event with a family friendly atmosphere. It will be a day to reignite happy memories and strengthen special friendships.
Amamoor State School opened on the 10th of October 1921, with an enrolment of 31 children. Diamond Field State School, 1913-1939 and Forest Station State School, 1939-1965 are also a part of Amamoor School’s history, for as these schools closed, the students transferred first to Forest Station and then Amamoor.
When the Amamoor School opened in 1921 it was not where it is today. It was on the Amamoor Dagun Road, going up the hill towards the lookout, on the left hand side. Mr George Dillon was the first Headmaster and he held that position for 19 years.
In 1949, the school reached 70 enrolments and there was an urgent overcrowding problem. The school building was relocated to its present site, in Elizabeth Street, with the addition of the Bollier School building. During the time of removal, the children were taught in the Amamoor Hall.
The school reopened in 1950, after being fenced to keep cattle out, and electricity was finally connected in mid 1951. Mr James Fitzgerald was the head teacher from 1949 to 1968, a period of 19 years.
A residence for the head teacher was built in 1952 at the end of Schoolhouse Road, bordering the school. By 1959, the school boasted tennis courts and another new classroom was added. 1970 saw the construction of a septic toilet block and the following year a tuckshop room was built beneath the school. As the number of students grew, more new buildings were added to make Amamoor State School what it is today.
Over the past 100 years, Amamoor State School has had 34 principals and numerous teachers and other support staff. To date, about 2000 students have passed through the school’s doors.
Amamoor State School has a very proud history and that pride continues today.
