2025 TERM 1 WEEK 4
PRINCIPAL REPORT

Our students and staff have been working hard to develop our improvement strategies for our 2025 Annual Implementation Plan. It has been a pleasure to see our classrooms in actions refining our instructional reading strategies and supporting our students to understand and goal set. Since the start of Term One, students have been delving into literacy and learning syllable blending and segmentation, whilst Foundation classes have been immersed in learning the skills for CVC decoding and encoding; phonemic blending, alphabet sounds and formation, and the segmentation of words into phonemes for spelling.
Five questions we ask students are (and you can too):
1. What are you learning?
2. How are you going?
3. How do you know?
4. How can you improve?
5. Where do you go for help?
The annual NAPLAN testing period for Years 3 and 5 is approaching in Week 7 starting on Wednesday 12th March. We start with the Writing task followed by Conventions of Language (ie Spelling + Grammar and Punctuation), Reading and Numeracy. If students are absent for any of the tests, they have the opportunity to complete the missed task/s by the end of Week 8 (Friday 21st March). As we do three times a week, we will have a delicious breakfast available on these mornings to ensure our students brains are ready to fire! NAPLAN is only one testing instrument we use, and is used by teachers to inform teaching and learning of our students specifically.
Attendance is especially important as we working hard on our assessments for Term One. Our teaching team are more than happy to work with our families in preparing consolidation activities they can do if there is planned absences for family reasons. Your child, our student. One team.
What a fantastic day our Year 3-6 students had at the Blaze Hockey Gala Day in Gympie. The players came back to school absolutely buzzing from their efforts. We even had one team that made the semi-final and only lost by one goal to the overall winner. Needless to say, today the students were already asking about when their next sporting adventure is. The school has been working with other sporting codes and cluster schools to provide these opportunities for our students for the year. Sports are vital for students’ holistic development, fostering teamwork, leadership, discipline and resilience. They enhance physical and mental health, reduce academic stress, and instil essential life values like fairness and responsibility. It was unfortunate that there was some unexpected absences yesterday by students who had provided consent to attend and due to the numbers, three teams were nominated. Whilst sickness can not be avoided, non attendance due to non willingness has a flow on effect to the process. A number of students had to play in two teams to ensure the day continued to run smoothly – they were willing but exhausted! As a school, we see the value in growth of students attending these days and we appreciate the support of families to continue to encourage students to attend. A huge thanks to Mrs Hughes and Mr Browne who were involved in the day. The reports of incredible effort and sportsmanship make our school proud!
